“You are the salt of the earth.” (Mt 5:13)

Today’s gospel reminds us that we are called to be ‘salt,’ to be that softening agent in the world, flavoring the world with values of sensitivity, gratuitousness, inclusiveness, understanding, and acceptance.

“You are the salt of the earth.” (Mt 5:13)

Fr. Learoy Rodrigues SJ
We live amidst a certain kind of abundance today. There is plenty to eat, to wear, to browse, to earn, and even to throw away.

Yet we sense some dissatisfaction engulfing our days. What’s needed is a certain seasoning, a flavoring to life, which comes only by allowing our lives to be tempered by the timeless values of the gospel.

Today’s gospel reminds us that we are called to be ‘salt,’ to be that softening agent in the world, flavoring the world with values of sensitivity, gratuitousness, inclusiveness, understanding, and acceptance.

This can help us enjoy the abundance. It does two other things to us. We begin to note that all is God’s gift, and we realize that we have a duty towards those most deprived.
