The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus | Saint of the Day

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus | Saint of the Day

The heart of Jesus is adored as a symbol of his threefold love: human, spiritual and divine. In the Old Testament, this love is described as a father’s love for his children or a husband’s for his wife. In the New Testament, the promise of living water, the Holy Spirit, is fulfilled in the pierced heart of the Messiah.

Our modern understanding of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been shaped by the visions experienced by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century. Everyone has seen its depiction which is the heart with a circle of thorns that represent the crown of thorns that was placed on Jesus’ head.

It also may have a cross, which represents the Crucifixion. A few also have symbols of flame or light surrounding it, which signifies the divine light of love. Mostly the Sacred Heart is seen in a portrait of Jesus Christ which can be found in most of the homes in India and across the world. It is a reminder of the love and devotion of Jesus to all of humanity, despite the suffering that has been and still is endured. In modern times, the image of the Sacred Heart in the home has become a sign that the love of Jesus rules over the family. In 1899, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
