Saint Mariam Thresia | Saint of the Day

Born on 26 April 1876 in Trichur district of Kerala, Mariam Thresia’s mother died when she was 12 and grew up under the care of her father Thoma. From childhood onwards her life was one of sufferings and trials. Even when she decided to join religious congregations, it was not a smooth one.

She joined the first one as a novice but when she felt that was not her call, she joined another one. Finally she founded her own Congregation of the Holy Family on 14 May 1914 and became its first Mother Superior. She became known for receiving frequent visions and ecstasies as well as even receiving the stigmata which she kept well-guarded.

She died on 8 June 1926. Her holy life was an attraction for the ordinary people to pray to her after her death. But it was the cure of the club-feet of Mathew D. Pellissery that made her beatification possible on 9 April 2000 in the Vatican City by Pope John Paul II and with another miracle she was canonized on 13 October 2019 by Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square.
