Mary Mother of the Church

Paul VI made the pronouncement of the title Mother of the Church during his speech upon the closing of the third session of the Second Vatican Council on November 21, 1964: “For the glory of the Virgin and our consolation, we proclaim Mary the Most Holy Mother of the Church, that is, the Mother of the whole People of God, both the faithful and the pastors.”

Pope Francis reinvigorated the title in 2018 by proclaiming the Monday after Pentecost - which is today - as the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Church. Jesus’ teaching focuses on a family together forever in the kingdom of heaven - which in other words is the Church.

Mary for her role in salvation history, is its mother. The Mother of the Church, in virtue of our membership and part of Christ’s eschatological family. Mary’s example of faith continues to inspire the Church to this very day. She is a model for all believers and from her we learn how to live a life of virtue.
