Today Jesus, using very strong words and statements, warns us: Be careful and do not sin. He really wants to save us, even from ourselves.

17-18; Mt. Matthew 5:27-32 (Ps Wk II)

The Sermon on the Mount is considered by many as the most inspiring text in the New Testament. Why? Mostly because it describes the qualities that the followers of Jesus are expected to possess. When we read this passage very carefully, we realize how challenging it is. Let us reflect together on today’s Gospel reading.

Jesus says: “Anyone who looks at a woman to satisfy his lust has in fact already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Mt. 5:28). This is a very strong statement, because it shows that even the eye is able to commit adultery. What you think about others, the way you look at others, can lead you to sin. This radical view of Jesus emphasizes the fact that not only our acts can be wrong, but also our thoughts and our words.

The most important lesson we learn from Jesus today is that sin is destructive. Sin does not lead to the fullness of life, but on the contrary to misery.

Today Jesus, using very strong words and statements, warns us: Be careful and do not sin. He really wants to save us, even from ourselves.

Lord Jesus, as Your words challenge us, may they also console and strengthen us.
