Lord, give me strength to be loyal to You

Lord, give me strength to be loyal to You. Bear fruit through me.

Lord, give me strength to be loyal to You

St Lawrence, Deacon & Martyr
2 Cor. 9:6-10; Ps. 112(111):1-2,5-6,7-8,9;
Jn. 12:24-26

During the 3rd Century, the Church was under persecution. It was during this time that Lawrence served as deacon, caring for the material goods of the Church in Rome. Government authorities seized Lawrence and demanded he hand over the Church’s valuables to them. Lawrence agreed to meet them in three days. During this time, he quietly gave away goods to the poor. On the third day, Lawrence met with the officials, bringing along a group of sick and needy. He told the officials, “These people are the true treasure of the Church.” This outraged the government officals. They burned Lawrence alive.

“…
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (Jn.12:24)

St. Lawrence knew that if he was faithful to God, he would
be hated. Yet, he sacrificed his life as a witness of love to God. In doing so, he inspired many others to choose to do what is right, to choose to be loyal to Jesus, even if this is inconvenient or painful.

A sacrifice placed in God’s hands
, even if it is small, can bear much fruit. Lord, what are you inviting me to sacrifice?

Lord,
give me strength to be loyal to You. Bear fruit through me.
