Eschatology

In the womb of history man must shape
A new heaven and a new earth
Where hands will not be raised as fists
Which will hold stones or swords

Eschatology

By Joe Palathunkal
Great professor Father Samuel Rayan
Comes to the class in a poetic pose
And begins the class on eschatology
In his poetic English prose
But he does not speak about the ends
Or the last frontiers of human history
Strange indeed is his hermeneutics and exegesis.
Bringing an end to the ends he says:
“Eschatology is the already-not yet.”

In the womb of history man must shape
A new heaven and a new earth
Where hands will not be raised as fists
Which will hold stones or swords
But hands will extend to the other
As bridges between hearts and hearts
With bread broken for every empty belly
To fill it with a morsel dipped in love;

Eschatology will be where the
Bread will be always broken
Ready to go into a million hands
And freedom, love and fraternity will echo
A new language without script and grammar
And when He comes robed in royal purple
Surprised He must be to see only the sheep and lambs.

(Homage to Dr. Samuel Rayan SJ the great teacher who breathed his last on 2 January 2019)
