Deepawali: Jesus is the Lamp of lamps

By Joe Palathunkal
Jesus refers to himself as the light of the world and right from his birth we can find a tremendous association with light.

It was a star, again a light that guided the Magi all the way to Bethlehem and the light that they received in their soul made them change their route to save the new-born.

When the infant is presented in the temple, old Simeon says (Luke 2: 32) referring to him ‘a light for revelation to the Gentiles’.

But the culmination comes when Jesus unambiguously states (John 8: 12): “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Through the festival of Deepawali Jesus Christ is telling us the same that if we follow him, darkness will have no power over us instead it will enlighten us to see clearly the dangers hidden in the darkness around us.

He will turn us into the lamp shining on a mountain peak to which all in the dark will look up to with the hope of seeing the true way of life.
