Christian missionaries targeted; Bishops claim 'witch hunt'

The recent developments in Jharkhand: the arrest of Missionaries of Charity sisters on allegations of illegal child trade and sixteen other missionaries on claims of conversion, are according to the Christian leaders in Jharkhand, an effort to defame the missionaries of the state.

"We have reports from different parts of the state about government searches. Through these search operations, the government is trying to prove that Christians and their institutions are involved in illegal activities," says Bishop Telesphore Bilung of Ranchi.

Fr. Peter Martin, who is providing the nuns, legal assistance, says that they “have reports from different parts of the state about government searches. Through these search operations, the government is trying to prove that Christians and their institutions are involved in illegal activities".

22 children have been moved from Nirmala Shishubhavan in Ranchi, and from Nirmal Hriday, 13 unmarried mothers, by the government officials.

"Charging the nuns with child trafficking is wildly absurd, unreasonable and nonsensical," says Abhraham Mathai, president of Indian Christian Voice. He went on to say that the “witch hunt” is "engineered by malicious motives to bring the admirable work of Missionaries of Charity to shame and disrepute both at home and abroad."
