Blessed Ralph Milner

Born in England, he supported his wife and eight children by manual labour. Brought up an Anglican, on the very day of his first Communion, he was arrested for changing religion.

In jail, he administered the sacraments to fellow prisoners. He was offered chance to attend the Protestant church and thus escape the gallows but he refused. Every effort was made to persuade him to renounce the Catholic Faith but  in vain.

On 7 July 1591 he was executed with Father Dicconson in front of his children.

Milner gave his children his last blessing, declared that “he could wish them no greater happiness than to die for the like cause”.

He was beatified in 1929.
