This is Ahilya Fort. Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar was home schooled by her father so that she could read and write at a time when women's education was a taboo. Coming from Maharashtra, she was married off at the age of 8 to Khanderao Holkar in 1733. Widowed at the age of 21, after Khanderao was killed in a battle, she went on to lead the Kingdom after the death of her father in law 12 years later. It was he who stopped Ahilyabai from committing sati. She went on to suffer another tragedy when her young son too died leaving no one to head the kingdom. I am here at the fort named after her at Maheshwar looking out for her legacy in literature, music and art. Maheshwar is around 100 kms from Udainagar.
