Philippine bishops call the faithful for days of "prayer, penance and alms-giving"

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines(CBCP) have called the faithful to spend four days in prayer, penance and alms-giving, in the wake of political tensions in the nation.

An apostolic exhortation, “Rejoice and be glad!”, released on July 9 by CBCP, includes the call for “peacemaking”.

Lately President Rodrigo Duterte had been involved in a blasphemous issue, on his remarks on God. The bishops condemned his attempt to “ridicule faith”.

“We are not political leaders, and certainly not political opponents of government,” they said, and continued that they value the leaders of the nation, given that the leaders "do not contradict the basic spiritual and moral principles" they "hold dear, such as respect for the sacredness of life, the integrity of creation, and the inherent dignity of the human person”.

They pointed out that "those who arrogantly regard themselves as wise in their own estimation and the Christian faith as nonsense, those who blaspheme our God as stupid, Saint Paul's words are to the point: 'For the stupidity of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength'”.
