Mar Jacob Manathodath becomes Apostolic Administrator of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese

Pope Francis has appointed H.E. Msgr. Jacob Manathodath, bishop of Palghat, as apostolic administrator “sede plena” of the metropolitan archieparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly Syro-Malabar Archdiocese.

Born as the eldest son of Kurian and Kathreena on 22nd February 1947, Mar Jacob Manathodath did his primary studies at L.P. School Kodamthuruth and High School studies at E.C. E.K. Union High School, Kuthiathode.

After his seminary studies at the Sacred Heart Minor Seminary, Ernakulam, he joined the Papal Seminary in Pune, and later acquired Licenciate in Philosophy and Master's in Theology.

On 4th November, 1942, he was ordained priest and in 1979, was sent for higher education in Rome, where he acquired Doctorate from Gregorian University, in Theology.

His first appointment was as the Asst. Vicar of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, Ernakulam. He has also served as Private Secretary to late Mar Joseph Cardinal Parecattil.

He hasalso served as the Archdiocesan Secretary, Secretary to Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara, Promoter of Justice and Defender of Bond at the Archdiocesan Tribunal, Chancellor, Parish Priest at Elamakara and Chempu, Eparchial Consulter, Executive Secretary of Save a Family Plan (India) and the Editor of “Ernakulam Missam”, in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam.

He was appointed as Professor at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva in 1990 and was nominated titular bishop of Abydus and Bishop Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam on September 6, 1992.

On November 28, 1992, he was ordained bishop and appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam. He was appointed the bishop of Palghat on 11th November 1996, by Pope John Paul II, and took canonical possession of the Eparchy on February 1, 1997.
